The Death of Murata Sansuke" is a powerful and poignant woodblock print by the renowned Japanese artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, created in 1877 as part of his series "Chronicles of the Conquest of Kagoshima in Satsuma Province." This full-length image depicts the final moments of Murata Sansuke, a prominent figure in the Satsuma Rebellion, also known as the Seinan War, which took place in the Meiji Era (1868-1912) in the southern Japanese province of Kagoshima. Murata Sansuke, an officer in the Imperial Japanese Army, is shown standing tall and resolute, his face a mask of determination, despite the fact that he is mortally wounded. A horse rears up behind him, its eyes wide with fear, as if sensing the imminent end. Murata's men, clad in red uniforms, gather around him, their faces a mixture of shock, sadness, and resolve. A banner bearing the calligraphy "General Saigo Takamori" flutters in the wind, a reminder of the leader of the rebellion.
