(Ukrainians)", was created by Karl Fiale in 1862 as part of the ethnographic study "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie" (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia). Commissioned by Tsar Alexander II to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire, this two-volume work aimed to document and celebrate the diverse ethnic groups inhabiting the vast Russian Empire. The work reflects the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s, providing a valuable insight into the rich cultural heritage of the Russian Empire during this period. This photograph is a testament to the extensive research and documentation efforts of Fiale and the broader ethnographic movement of the time.
