New railway-bridge over the Rhine, near Mayence, 1862. Creator: Unknown

New railway-bridge over the Rhine, near Mayence, 1862. The bridge was...constructed according to the comparatively new system called "Pauli's system", vulgo "Fish-shaped girder system" which seem to be extremely well adapted for large spans, as regards economy and rigidity of structure...The new bridge is built by the Hessische Ludwigs-Bahn Company, and the engineers and contractors for the iron structure...are Messrs. Klet and Co, of Nurnberg. It will form part of the great route from the Rhine to Vienna. The traffic at this point of the line is now effected by steamers, which carry the laden waggons across the Rhine, at a considerable cost'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, hailing from the mid-19th century, showcases the new railway bridge over the Rhine near Mayence, Germany. The bridge was constructed according to Pauli's system, also known as the Fish-shaped girder system, which proved to be exceptionally effective for large spans, offering both economy and rigidity. Commissioned by the Hessische Ludwigs-Bahn Company, the engineers and contractors responsible for the bridge's iron structure were Messrs. Klet and Co, based in Nurnberg. This engineering marvel will play a significant role in the grand route connecting the Rhine to Vienna. At the time of this image's creation, traffic at this point of the line was facilitated through steamers, transporting laden wagons across the Rhine at a substantial cost. The advent of this railway bridge was expected to revolutionize transportation in the region. The intricately detailed engraving, published in the Illustrated London News in 1862, offers a glimpse into the technological advancements of the era, showcasing the power and potential of civil engineering during the 19th century. This image, with its striking contrasts of black and white, serves as a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the human spirit to conquer the natural challenges of geography.
