EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 18th century woodcarving from Tibet, we encounter Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, in his form as Dorje Drölö, the Subduer of Demons. Padmasambhava is considered the second Buddha and the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, having introduced Buddhism to the Tibetan people in the 8th century. This intricately carved and painted statuette showcases Padmasambhava in his fierce aspect as Dorje Drölö, a protector deity who vanquishes demons and obstacles. The deity is depicted with a wrathful countenance, his eyes bulging and his tongue protruding, symbolizing his fierce determination to overcome adversity. He is adorned with various protective symbols, including a crown of five skulls, a trident, and a vajra in his right hand, and a bell in his left. The richly colored woodcarving showcases exquisite detail, with intricate patterns adorning the deity's clothing and the base of the statue. The wood, which has aged with a warm patina, adds to the sense of antiquity and reverence. The statue's location in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is a testament to its cultural significance and the importance of preserving heritage art from the Asian continent. Padmasambhava's transformative role in Tibetan Buddhism and his continued reverence as a protector deity make this statue a valuable and intriguing addition to any collection of Asian art or religious artifacts. The intricate carving and vibrant colors serve as a reminder of the rich artistic heritage of Tibet and the enduring influence of Buddhism in Asian culture.
