"The Jordan" Epiphany Custom at St. Petersburg, 1856. Creator: Henry Duff Linton. "The Jordan" Epiphany Custom at St. Petersburg, 1856. Creator: Henry Duff Linton

"The Jordan" Epiphany Custom at St. Petersburg, 1856. Ceremony...in commemoration of the baptism of Christ, on the 6th of January, on the ice of the Neva, in front of the Imperial Winter Palace...on the arrival of the Emperor, the commencement of the ceremony is announced by the firing of a few guns...the Metropolitan descends a few steps to where a hole has been cut in the ice, and, immersing his cross into the water, blesses it amidst the full chant of the chorus...there is a rush of the people to get the holy water. Pails jars, jugs, bottles, vessels of every description...are...filled with the holy water. This water is held by the superstitious Russian to possess the power to banish by its presence alone the domoivoi (or the black spirit)...It is likewise a universal medicine for any illness, both of body and mind. Those who have obtained larger quantities generally retail it'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856
