View from the Terrace of the Castle Loches, 1884. Artist: Emmanuel Lansyer

View from the Terrace of the Castle Loches, Touraine, France, 1884. Built on a rocky outcrop (on the site of a Gallic oppidum) the chateau towers over the town and its outer walls conceal a beautiful medieval city. The heir apparent to the throne, Charles, took refuge there and then came the historic moment when Joan of Arc begged him to go to Reims to be crowned king. Once he had become Charles VII, he went back to the chateau with his Damoyselle de Beaute, Agnes Sorel, the first official mistress of a king of France. Louis XI enlarged the fortress and made it a state prison, while Louis XII built the second wing of the Royal Residence, on the northern wing of the outer wall, which contrasts with the southern wing, which looks more feudal with its turrets, watchtowers, and its parapet

Painted by renowned artist Emmanuel Lansyer in 1884, this masterpiece transports you to Touraine, France, where history and beauty intertwine. Perched majestically on a rocky outcrop, the castle looms over a medieval city concealed within its outer walls. It was here that Charles, heir apparent to the throne sought refuge and received an extraordinary visit from none other than Joan of Arc herself. Urging him to be crowned king in Reims, their encounter marked a pivotal moment in French history. Over centuries, this fortress evolved under different monarchs' hands. Louis XI transformed it into a state prison while Louis XII added his touch with another wing for royal residence. The contrasting northern and southern wings showcase architectural marvels such as turrets, watchtowers, and parapets that evoke both feudal grandeur and regal elegance. Lansyer's brushstrokes bring vibrant colors to life on canvas as he captures every intricate detail of this historical gem. From terracotta rooftops to lush landscapes stretching beyond sight - each element tells its own story. Allow yourself to be transported back to the 19th century as you gaze upon this remarkable piece of art media.
