The women, dressed in their traditional attire, represent the rich cultural diversity of the region. On the left, a Cossack woman is depicted in her distinctive uniform, complete with a fur hat, a long, flowing skirt, and a sash adorned with metal fittings. The Cossacks were a group of semi-autonomous military settlers who played an essential role in the Russian Empire's expansion and defense. To the right, a Mari woman is shown carrying a large, woven basket on her back. The Mari people, also known as the Cheremis, are an indigenous Finno-Ugric ethnic group residing primarily in the Volga region. Their traditional clothing consists of long, brightly colored dresses, often adorned with intricate embroidery.
