EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print showcases the esteemed French engineer, Germain Sommeiller (1815-1871), who left an indelible mark on history with his groundbreaking design and construction of the Mont-Cenis Tunnel. A pioneer in civil engineering, Sommeiller's vision transformed the way people and goods moved between France and Italy. Built between 1857 and 1871, the Mont-Cenis Tunnel is an engineering marvel that spans over 57 kilometers, connecting the two European countries through the Alps. At the time, it was the longest rail tunnel in the world, a title it held until the completion of the Simplon Tunnel in 1906. Sommeiller's innovative approach to tunnel construction overcame numerous challenges, including the harsh Alpine terrain and the need to maintain the safety of the workers. His team employed a technique called the 'New Austrian Method,' which involved excavating the tunnel from both ends and meeting in the middle. This method significantly reduced the risk of collapses and allowed for faster construction. The Mont-Cenis Tunnel revolutionized transportation in Europe, drastically reducing travel time and increasing trade between France and Italy. It also paved the way for further advancements in tunnel engineering, inspiring the construction of other notable tunnels such as the Channel Tunnel and the Gotthard Base Tunnel. This photograph print is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of Germain Sommeiller, whose legacy continues to shape the world of transportation and engineering. A true visionary, he overcame seemingly insurmountable challenges to connect two countries and bring people closer together.
