A pioneer in civil engineering, Sommeiller's vision transformed the way people and goods moved between France and Italy. Built between 1857 and 1871, the Mont-Cenis Tunnel is an engineering marvel that spans over 57 kilometers, connecting the two European countries through the Alps. At the time, it was the longest rail tunnel in the world, a title it held until the completion of the Simplon Tunnel in 1906.
