EDITORS COMMENTS
John Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset (1403-1444), was a prominent figure in the Hundred Years War between England and France. Born in 1403, he was the illegitimate son of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster, and Katherine Swynford. In 1414, Beaufort was created Earl of Somerset by King Henry V, and in 1442, he was further honored with the title Duke of Somerset by King Henry VI, who was Beaufort's grandson through his mother. This striking portrait depicts John, Duke of Somerset, in regal attire, wearing the ducal robes and the ducal coronet adorned with the red and gold livery colors of the House of Beaufort. The duke's expression is serious and resolute, reflecting his military prowess and leadership abilities. He served as captain general in Aquitaine and Normandy, leading the English forces in the ongoing conflict against the French. The creation of the dukedom of Somerset was a strategic move by King Henry VI to secure the support of the powerful Beaufort family in his ongoing struggle for the throne against the House of York. The duke's military expertise and influence were invaluable to the monarch, and he played a crucial role in maintaining English control over the territories in southwestern France and northern France. This evocative portrait captures the essence of John, Duke of Somerset, as a powerful and influential figure in the Hundred Years War, a man who played a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of medieval Europe and paving the way for the Tudor dynasty through his grandson, King Henry VII.
