John Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset (1403-1444), was a prominent figure in the Hundred Years War between England and France. Born in 1403, he was the illegitimate son of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster, and Katherine Swynford. In 1414, Beaufort was created Earl of Somerset by King Henry V, and in 1442, he was further honored with the title Duke of Somerset by King Henry VI, who was Beaufort's grandson through his mother. This striking portrait depicts John, Duke of Somerset, in regal attire, wearing the ducal robes and the ducal coronet adorned with the red and gold livery colors of the House of Beaufort. The duke's expression is serious and resolute, reflecting his military prowess and leadership abilities.
