EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts the Preston-Somers expedition against Santiago de Leon de Caracas, a significant event during the Anglo-Spanish War of the late 16th century. The expedition, led by Sir Walter Raleigh's lieutenants, Sir John Preston and Sir Edward Somers, took place between May and July of 1595. The image captures the intensity and determination of the English troops as they advance through the dense tropical forest of Venezuela. The soldiers, dressed in armor and helmets, push their way through the undergrowth, their weapons at the ready. The forest, teeming with lush vegetation and exotic wildlife, provides a stark contrast to the uniformity of the soldiers' wooden shields and pikes. The expedition's goal was the capture of Santiago de Leon de Caracas, a Spanish stronghold and important trading port. The successful capture of the city would give the English a strategic advantage in their ongoing conflict with Spain. The print's title, "The Capture of Caracas," reflects the ultimate success of the mission. The South American campaign was part of a larger effort by Queen Elizabeth I of England to expand her empire and assert English dominance in the New World. The Anglo-Spanish War of the late 1500s saw numerous military campaigns and naval battles between the two powers, with the Caribbean and the Americas being key battlegrounds. This print, created in the 1590s, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of exploration, conquest, and colonial expansion. The image serves as a reminder of the complex and often violent history of European interaction with the New World and the far-reaching consequences of these early encounters.
