EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite and extremely rare bronze trench art souvenir commemorates the sinking of the RMS Lusitania during World War I. The Lusitania, a British ocean liner, was sunk a mile east of Folkestone gate by German submarine U5 on May 7, 1915. This turned bronze bowl was made from a portion of the U5 that was captured by HMS Firedrake in July 1916. The bowl is engraved with a depiction of the submarine that was responsible for the tragic sinking. The bowl was presented to Assistant Paymaster A.W. Beard on the occasion of his marriage on November 19, 1917, by Engr. Comdr. Ham R.N. The 7.75-inch bowl is a unique and poignant reminder of the wartime era and the events that transpired during that time. The intricate details of the submarine, including its fish-like tail and scales, are beautifully rendered in the bronze. The 1910s were a time of great upheaval, with the world embroiled in a devastating war. This bronze bowl offers a glimpse into that era, providing a connection to the past and a reminder of the marine life that lies beneath the waves. The bowl's history adds to its value, making it a truly unique and fascinating piece of trench art.
