RMS Lusitania - bronze trench art, WW1

RMS Lusitania - extremely rare WW1 bronze trench art souvenir related to the sinking of the original Lusitania. She was sunk a mile east of Folkestone gate by German submarine U5. The turned bronze bowl was made from a portion of the U5 which was captured in July 1916 (see 13745871). The bowl is engraved a portion of the submarine captured by HMS Firedrake. Presented to Asst. Pay. A.W. Beard by Engr. Comdr. Ham R.N. on the occasion of his marriage 19th November 1917. 7.75 inches. Date: 1917

This exquisite and extremely rare bronze trench art souvenir commemorates the sinking of the RMS Lusitania during World War I. The Lusitania, a British ocean liner, was sunk a mile east of Folkestone gate by German submarine U5 on May 7, 1915. This turned bronze bowl was made from a portion of the U5 that was captured by HMS Firedrake in July 1916. The bowl is engraved with a depiction of the submarine that was responsible for the tragic sinking. The bowl was presented to Assistant Paymaster A.W. Beard on the occasion of his marriage on November 19, 1917, by Engr. Comdr. Ham R.N.
