EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases two intriguing reptiles: the Rhinoceros Viper, Bitis nasicornis, and the Carpet Python, Morelia spilota. The Rhinoceros Viper, depicted in the foreground, is easily identified by its distinctive horn-like structures above its eyes and its large, triangular head. This snake is native to Africa and is known for its ability to camouflage itself among the rocks and stones of its arid habitat. In contrast, the Carpet Python, Morelia spilota, can be found in the background of the image. This snake is native to Australia and is named for its beautiful, colorful scales that resemble a carpet. Carpet Pythons are excellent climbers and are often found in trees, where they wait for their prey to come within reach. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this illustration are a testament to the skill of the engraver. The use of handcoloring adds an additional layer of depth and richness to the image. This historical illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the late 18th century and serves as a reminder of the enduring allure of snakes and reptiles.
