EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph captures a moment during a séance led by the Austrian spiritualist medium Willi Schneider (1903-1971) in his hometown of Braunau. The image, taken with a flashlight, shows a white cloth "phantom" pinned to a curtain by a safety pin. Schneider, the brother of Rudi Schneider, was a subject of intense investigation by notable psychical researchers Harry Price, Albert von Schrenck-Notzing, and Eric J. Dingwall. During the séance, Schneider was known to produce materializations and other paranormal phenomena. In this instance, the appearance of the white cloth on the curtain was observed by a group of researchers and observers, including Price, Schrenck-Notzing, and Dingwall. The safety pin used to secure the cloth was examined and found to be untouched by human hands. The investigation into Schneider's mediumistic abilities was significant in the history of parapsychology, as it provided some of the most compelling evidence for the authenticity of spiritualist phenomena. The photograph of the white cloth "phantom" is a testament to the unusual and unexplained occurrences that took place during these séances. This image is part of the Harry Price Library collection at the University of London, and is a valuable historical record of the paranormal investigations that took place in the early 20th century. The photograph, taken with a flashlight, adds an air of mystery and intrigue to the already fascinating subject matter.
