EDITORS COMMENTS
Joseph Daugherty, aged 14, proudly displays his collection of tattoos in this photo. With a total of 60 intricate designs adorning his young skin, Joseph stands out among his peers at Shotton Hall County Modern School in County Durham. Surprisingly, he is not alone in this venture as thirty other students have also chosen to get inked by the same artist - Ernie Franks. The controversial nature of these tattoos has caught the attention of Durham County Education Authorities who are launching an inquiry into the matter. However, Mr. Franks defends himself by claiming that he receives consent notes from the boys' parents before proceeding with their requests. This snapshot captures a moment frozen in time during July 1964 when body art was still considered taboo and unconventional for teenagers like Joseph. The photograph serves as a reminder of the rebellious spirit and desire for self-expression that often characterizes adolescence. While opinions may differ on whether such permanent markings are appropriate for someone so young, it is undeniable that Joseph's tattoos reflect his individuality and personal style. This image encapsulates a unique chapter in history where societal norms clashed with youthful defiance.
