EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of the devastating Blitz on Alfred Gelder St, Hull, Yorkshire. The image showcases a temporary brick one-floor high annex to The Head Post Office that had been completely demolished during the July 1941 bombings. As we gaze upon this poignant scene from 1947, hope fills the air as plans for rebuilding work are anticipated for the following year. The Hull Blitz was a relentless bombing campaign by the German Luftwaffe during World War II that targeted Kingston upon Hull. This historic port city endured numerous large-scale attacks throughout March 1941, resulting in over 200 deaths. However, it was on the nights of May 7/8 and May 8/9 when tragedy struck hardest with nearly 400 lives lost. Another significant attack occurred in July of that same year claiming an additional 143 lives. During these tumultuous times, Hull spent more than a thousand hours under alert from June 19th, 1940 until the end of the war in 1945. Tragically, almost twelve hundred people lost their lives due to relentless bombings. As we reflect on this photograph taken on February 4th, 1947 by Mirrorpix (not associated with any company), let us remember those who suffered and perished during these dark days. It serves as a stark reminder of resilience and determination in rebuilding shattered communities after such devastation.
