EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the essence of a dashing airman from the 1920s, promoting Player's Airman Tobaccos. The triangular counter card showcases the head and shoulders of a man dressed in a stylish leather jacket with a fur collar, complete with a flying helmet and goggles. With an air of sophistication, he casually smokes his pipe while exuding confidence. Surrounding the central image are packs of various tobacco blends including Brown Honeydew, Navy Cut, Golden Honeydew, Flake, and Mixture tobaccos. A banner above proudly displays "PLAYERs AIRMAN // TOBACCOS" in elegant script with scroll ends. On the right-hand side of the picture is text indicating that all these premium tobaccos are available at just 9 1/2D per ounce. The reverse side features a support to prop up this unique card as well as handwritten notes providing historical context. One note suggests that this particular piece dates back to approximately 1928 while another indicates its receipt in 1926. With its strong military undertones and nods to aviation culture, this photograph evokes nostalgia for an era when pilots were seen as heroes and smoking was considered fashionable. It serves as both an intriguing artifact from Nottingham's past and a testament to John Player & Sons' advertising prowess during that time period.
