The hemisphere at right is showing extensive haemorrhaging (bleeding, brown areas) and haematoma (bruising, dark brown). This bleeding, along with oedema (accumulation of fluid), has caused the brain to swell and herniated (displaced) the cingulate gyrus (upper centre) and compressed the ventricles (spaces at centre)

This striking print captures the devastating effects of a blunt trauma on the human brain. The image showcases a gross specimen of a section through a brain, revealing the aftermath of this traumatic injury. The hemisphere at the right side of the photo exhibits extensive haemorrhaging, evident from the prominent brown areas indicating bleeding, as well as dark brown bruising known as haematoma. The consequences of this bleeding and fluid accumulation are apparent in the swollen state of the brain, which has led to herniation - displacement - of the cingulate gyrus located in the upper center. Additionally, this swelling has compressed the ventricles, spaces within our brains that play crucial roles in cerebrospinal fluid circulation.
