Frederic Cope Whitehouse (1842-1911), US archaeologist, Egyptologist, author, engineer and lawyer. Whitehouse studied at Columbia University, graduating in 1861. His studies included a survey of Lake Moeris in Egypt, site of engineering works during the time of Ancient Egypt, Fingals Cave, and the Caves of Staffa. He gave papers to the United States National Academy of Sciences and wrote articles in Popular Science Monthly. He was also a member of numerous learned societies. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USAs earliest news picture libraries. The bulk of the Bain images date from the 1890s to the 1930s
