Electrical certification, 19th century

Electrical certification. This is the calibration room of the Central Electricity Laboratory (Laboratoire Central d Electricite, LCE), Paris, France. This national institution was founded to certify equipment, carry out research, and ensure safety in the new industry. The LCE was proposed in 1882, and established in 1888. Equipment tested included light bulbs, batteries, car headlamps, and power supplies. In 1943 the LCE became the LCIE (Laboratoire Central des Industries Electriques), and in 2001 became LCIE Bureau Veritas. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historical significance of electrical certification in the 19th century. Taken in the calibration room of the Central Electricity Laboratory (Laboratoire Central d'Electricite, LCE) in Paris, France, this image showcases a national institution dedicated to certifying equipment, conducting research, and ensuring safety within the burgeoning electrical industry. Established in 1888 after being proposed in 1882, the LCE played a crucial role in testing various apparatus such as light bulbs, batteries, car headlamps, and power supplies. The laboratory's commitment to upholding standards and advancing technological advancements made it an indispensable part of French industrial progress. The artwork featured here is from volume seven (first period of 1891) of La Science Illustree - a popular science weekly magazine that aimed to disseminate knowledge about scientific discoveries. This mono chrome illustration offers us a glimpse into the meticulous workbench setup and calibration tables within this renowned laboratory. Over time, as electricity became increasingly vital across industries, the LCE transformed into LCIE (Laboratoire Central des Industries Electriques) in 1943 before eventually becoming LCIE Bureau Veritas in 2001. Today's viewers can appreciate how this photograph encapsulates both history and innovation at one central location where government oversight ensured safety while promoting breakthroughs within electrical engineering. This remarkable image serves as a testament to France's pivotal role during Europe's electrification era while highlighting significant milestones achieved by institutions like LCE/LCIE Bureau Veritas throughout their rich history.
