Model of Lucy

Model of Lucy, a young female Australopithecus afarensis hominid. The model was created from a cast of Lucys bones, and exhibited at the Kenya National Museum, Nairobi, Kenya. The fossil bones are around 3.3 million years old, and are generally thought to represent the earliest known ancestor of humans. The skeleton was found in the Afar region of Ethiopia in 1974. A. afarensis lived between 3.9 and 2.9 million years ago. The structure of the pelvis and legs suggests that it was bipedal. A set of fossilised footprints found in Laetoli, Tanzania, that date from around 3.5 million years ago also provide evidence for bipedalism

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable model of Lucy, a young female Australopithecus afarensis hominid. Created from an intricate cast of Lucy's ancient bones, this model is proudly exhibited at the Kenya National Museum in Nairobi, Kenya. These fossil bones are estimated to be around 3.3 million years old and are widely believed to represent our earliest known human ancestor. Discovered in the Afar region of Ethiopia back in 1974, A. afarensis lived between 3.9 and 2.9 million years ago. The structure of its pelvis and legs strongly suggests that it was capable of bipedalism - walking upright on two feet - which is a defining characteristic for humans. Further evidence supporting this theory comes from the discovery of fossilized footprints found in Laetoli, Tanzania dating back approximately 3.5 million years ago. This extraordinary model provides us with a glimpse into our prehistoric past and sheds light on the biological evolution that led to modern humans today. It serves as a testament to the groundbreaking fieldwork conducted by anthropologists, paleontologists, and biologists who tirelessly study these ancient remains. With meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy, this reconstructed representation allows us to visualize what Lucy may have looked like during her time as an early hominid roaming Africa millions of years ago. Photographed by Science Photo Library, this image beautifully captures both the artistry behind creating such models as well as their immense scientific significance within fields such as anthropology and evolutionary biology.
