One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled "Inhabitants of the Lower Caroline Islands," is an intriguing glimpse into the lives of the indigenous people of Oceania during the 19th century. The image, created by the skilled hands of Russian artists Alexander Postels and Godefroy Engelmann, is one of 65 lithographs that were included in the comprehensive volume of maps published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke (also known as Friedrich Benjamin von Lütke), this expedition began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. The voyage was part of a series of scientific naval surveys carried out by Russia in the first part of the 19th century. In this evocative image, we see four men from the Caroline Islands, a group of Micronesian islands in the western Pacific Ocean. The men are depicted barechested, their hair styled in intricate braids or left loose. They are meeting in a peaceful setting, their expressions thoughtful and engaged. The image offers a window into the rich cultural heritage of these islands and the people who called them home. This lithograph, with its meticulous attention to detail and nuanced portrayal of the subjects, is a testament to the artists' skill and the importance of ethnographic documentation during this period of exploration and discovery. Today, it is preserved in the Library of Congress, a reminder of the enduring value of historical records and the beauty of the world's diverse peoples.
