Inhabitants of the lower Caroline Islands, 19th century. Creators: Alexander Postels, Godefroy Engelmann

Inhabitants of the lower Caroline Islands, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled 'Inhabitants of the Lower Caroline Islands,' is an intriguing glimpse into the lives of the indigenous people of the Caroline Islands in the Pacific Ocean during the 19th century. The image, created by the skilled hands of Alexander Postels and Godefroy Engelmann, is one of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin. The expedition, led by Captain Fedor Litke, began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was part of a series of Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century. In this image, we see four local inhabitants of the Caroline Islands, three men and one woman, dressed in traditional attire. The men are bare-chested, their hair styled in intricate braids or left to flow freely. The woman wears a skirt made of leaves or fibers, and her hair is adorned with flowers. They appear to be engaged in a meeting or conversation, their expressions thoughtful and engaged. The image is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Caroline Islands and the importance of ethnographic documentation during the age of exploration. It is a reminder of the diverse and complex societies that existed before the encroachment of European colonialism. This lithograph, now housed in the Library of Congress, is a valuable resource for scholars of anthropology, ethnography, and ethnology, providing insights into the lives of the indigenous peoples of Oceania during a time of great change and discovery.
