The fifth Earl Stanhope, Viscount Stanhope of Mahon, and Baron Stanhope of the Peerage of Great Britain, held various prestigious positions in British politics and society during the 19th century. He served as Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs in Sir Robert Peel's first government from December 1834 to August 1835. Earl Stanhope was renowned for his artistic tastes and literary ability. He was the founder of the National Portrait Gallery and served as its president for some time.
