Philip Henry Stanhope, fifth Earl Stanhope, Viscount Stanhope of Mahon, and Baron Stanhope of the Peerage of Great Britain...was for a short time - namely, from December, 1834, to August, 1835 - Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs in Sir Robert Peel's first Government...The late Earl was remarkable for his artistic tastes and literary ability, and was the originator of the National Portrait Gallery and some time president of the Literary Fund Association. He was also president of the Society of Antiquaries, a member of the Academy of Moral and Political Science...and Lord Rector of the University of Aberdeen...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

This engraving is an elegant portrait of The Late Earl Stanhope, Philip Henry Stanhope, who was born on March 12, 1793, and passed away in 1875. The fifth Earl Stanhope, Viscount Stanhope of Mahon, and Baron Stanhope of the Peerage of Great Britain, held various prestigious positions in British politics and society during the 19th century. He served as Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs in Sir Robert Peel's first government from December 1834 to August 1835. Earl Stanhope was renowned for his artistic tastes and literary ability. He was the founder of the National Portrait Gallery and served as its president for some time. Additionally, he was a president of the Literary Fund Association, the Society of Antiquaries, and a member of the Academy of Moral and Political Science. Furthermore, he held the position of Lord Rector of the University of Aberdeen. This distinguished gentleman's legacy extends beyond politics, as he was also a patron of the arts and a collector of prints. Earl Stanhope's contributions to British society and culture are commemorated in this poignant obituary published in the Illustrated London News in 1876.
