EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the grand opening of the New Reading-Room at the Bank of England, which took place on Wednesday, 1850. The room, established for the Bank of England Library and Literary Association, was opened by Thomson Hankey, jun. Esq., Deputy-Governor of the Bank, with the Chief Cashier acting as President and the Chief Accountant serving as the Treasurer. The occasion was marked by a heartfelt vote of thanks to the Court of Directors for their generous investment in the Library's fitting-out. The New Reading-Room was designed as a haven for the Bank's clerks, providing them with a comfortable and well-appointed space to read and expand their knowledge. The room boasted an impressive collection of books, housed in elegant bookshelves, and was furnished with desks and tables, all bathed in the soft glow of gas lighting. The photograph captures the essence of the Victorian era, with men in formal attire engrossed in their reading or engaged in quiet conversation. The Bank of England Library and Literary Association, with the support of its dedicated committee and the hon. secretary, Mr. J. R. Durrant, of the Three-and-a-Quarter per Cent Office, was poised to become one of the most remarkable institutions in the metropolis. This photograph, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Bank of England and the importance of literature and education in the lives of its employees during the 19th century.
