The Politician - by Hasenclever, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Politician - by Hasenclever, 1850. The author of this clever picture, Herr Hasenclever, is, we believe, resident in Munich. There is, at least, no mistaking the numerous beer-jugs as designating some tavern where the renowned Baierisches bier (Bavarian beer) is the habitual beverage. It designates a comparatively modern period, as it is only lately that the Germans have become such intense politicians as to neglect their supper, their favourite meal, for the newspaper. The principal figure...is so immersed in the Politische Zeitung (political tidings) that he does not notice the dog eating his fish and upsetting his beer. The two other figures in the background playing at draughts and sending forth huge volumes of tobacco-smoke, are quite in accordance with the general character of the German hotel, keller, or wirthshaus'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Politician" by Hasenclever, an 1850 engraving by an unknown artist, captures the essence of German politics and culture during the nineteenth century. The scene takes place in a typical Bavarian tavern, as indicated by the numerous beer jugs. The focus of the image is the engrossed figure of a man, deeply absorbed in the Politische Zeitung (political tidings), oblivious to the dog stealing his fish and knocking over his beer. Two other figures in the background are engrossed in a game of draughts, sending forth huge volumes of tobacco smoke. The candles on the table and the candlestick in the foreground add to the cozy, indoor atmosphere of the tavern. The man's attire, complete with spectacles and a pipe, is typical of the era, as is the meerschaum pipe clenched in the hand of one of the background figures. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News, humorously depicts the intensity of German politics, with men neglecting their meals and even their pets in their pursuit of the latest news. The image is a snapshot of a specific time and place, yet its themes of politics, drinking, and camaraderie continue to resonate with audiences today. The artist, Johann Peter Hasenclever, is believed to have been a resident of Munich, and his clever observation of German life is evident in this charming and humorous print. The image, with its intricate details and shading, is a testament to the skill of the engraver and the enduring appeal of this scene from the past.
