EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th-century portrait, titled "Portrait of Major General Paul Mascarene" by John Smibert, captures the distinguished likeness of Jean Paul Mascarenne, a major general in the British army during the early 1700s. Born in France as a Huguenot, Mascarene served in the French army before immigrating to Nova Scotia, Canada, where he became an administrator and military officer. The oil on canvas painting, created in the 1720s, showcases Mascarene in full military regalia, wearing an ornate suit of armor and adorned with various insignia of his rank. The portrait's rich, black background adds depth and contrast to Mascarene's striking features and the intricate details of his attire. Mascarene's portrait is a testament to the complexities of colonial history during the 18th century, as he represents the interconnectedness of Britain, France, and North America. The painting is now part of the permanent collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), having been acquired with funds provided by Mr. and Mrs. William Preston Harrison, the Charles H. Quinn Bequest, Eli Harvey, and other donors. The portrait's historic significance and artistic merit make it a valuable addition to LACMA's collection of heritage art and historical figures.
