This stunning 18th-century portrait, titled "Portrait of Major General Paul Mascarene" by John Smibert, captures the distinguished likeness of Jean Paul Mascarenne, a major general in the British army during the early 1700s. Born in France as a Huguenot, Mascarene served in the French army before immigrating to Nova Scotia, Canada, where he became an administrator and military officer. The oil on canvas painting, created in the 1720s, showcases Mascarene in full military regalia, wearing an ornate suit of armor and adorned with various insignia of his rank. The portrait's rich, black background adds depth and contrast to Mascarene's striking features and the intricate details of his attire.
