The Royal Visit to the East End: the Queen declaring the new wing of the London Hospital open, 1876. Creator: C.R

The Royal Visit to the East End: the Queen declaring the new wing of the London Hospital open, 1876. The Duke of Cambridge, president of the hospital, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Bishop of London, and the vice-presidents and treasurer of the hospital, with the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs, and the Secretary of State for the Home Department were in waiting to receive the Queen....The address of the governors was then presented to her Majesty by the Duke of Cambridge, as president, and in this document special stress was laid upon the almost unparalleled response which had been made to the appeal for funds for the enlargement of the building, resulting in a subscription of £90, 000, of which £20, 000 had been presented by the Grocers Company, in acknowledgment of whose gift the wing had been named after the company'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in London's history as Queen Victoria makes her way to declare the opening of the new wing of the London Hospital in 1876. Surrounded by dignitaries, including the Duke of Cambridge, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Bishop of London, the Queen is shown in regal attire, ready to perform the official ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new wing, a testament to the generosity and community spirit of the time, was made possible through an extraordinary fundraising effort. The governors of the hospital, led by the Duke of Cambridge, presented a heartfelt address to the Queen, highlighting the unprecedented response to their appeal for funds. Among the significant contributions was a donation of £20,000 from the Grocers' Company, for which the new wing was named in their honor. The Illustrated London News documented this momentous occasion, immortalizing it in their publication for the world to witness the unity and compassion of Londoners during this time.
