St Annes School, Alcester Street, Deritend, Digbeth, Birmingham. An old man seated outside St Annes School, Alcester Street. The headmasters log records that the adjacent Saint Annes Church reopened on 31st August 1941 upon completion of repairs due to bomb damage. This view shows the school with windows boarded, probably as a result of air raids. The building was demolished after the war and a new school was built in Lowe Street. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment in history at St Annes School, Deritend. The image showcases an elderly gentleman seated outside the school building on Alcester Street. With its windows boarded up, evidence of the devastating impact of air raids during World War II is apparent. The adjacent Saint Annes Church had recently reopened after extensive repairs due to bomb damage, as noted in the headmasters log on August 31st, 1941. This view serves as a stark reminder of the destruction caused by the Blitz and highlights the resilience and determination of those who lived through such challenging times. Sadly, this beautiful Victorian-era school was demolished following the war. However, it was replaced by a new school located on Lowe Street. Today, St Annes Parish Centre stands proudly on this site. George Bernard Mason's skillful photography not only documents architectural history but also evokes emotions of despair and loss brought about by war. The image speaks volumes about human strength amidst adversity and serves as a powerful testament to our shared past. As we reflect upon this photograph print from Historic England, let us remember those who endured these hardships and honor their memory while striving for peace and unity in our world today.
