EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Totem Pole in Windsor Great Park, standing tall and proud against the backdrop of Runnymede, Surrey. A view looking up reveals the intricate details carved into this remarkable piece of art and design. Presented to Queen Elizabeth II in June 1958 by Chief Mungo Martin of the Kwakiutl or Kwakwaka wakw tribe, this towering pole stands at an impressive height of 100 feet. It serves as a commemorative monument, marking the centenary of British Columbia's proclamation as a Crown Colony in 1858 by Queen Victoria. The creation process itself holds historical significance as well. To construct this masterpiece, a venerable 600-year-old tree was felled and skillfully carved by Chief Mungo Martin himself. Another identical totem pole was crafted and remained in Vancouver, Canada. In 1985, delegates from the Kwakwaka wakw tribe repainted this extraordinary artwork with great care and precision. The vibrant colors breathe new life into its intricate patterns and symbols that are representative of Northwest Coast art. Norman Barnard expertly captured every detail through his lens for all to appreciate. This print not only showcases an exceptional work of art but also pays homage to cultural heritage and celebrates the enduring bond between nations across continents.
