EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Gaydon Airfield, located in Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire. Taken during the 1950s, it showcases a diligent workman operating a Holman compactor while concreting the runway or aircraft apron at RAF Gaydon. The image serves as a testament to the immense effort put into expanding and improving Gaydon Airfield after World War II. In early 1952, construction commenced on a new runway, signaling an era of growth and development for this vital military facility. The ambitious project was soon followed by another contract that involved constructing over 100 Easiform buildings, 23 Nissen Huts, and various Air Ministry structures. Laing Construction Company played an integral role in transforming Gaydon Airfield's infrastructure during this period. Notably, they undertook the construction of two state-of-the-art aircraft hangars that further solidified the airfield's importance within the Royal Air Force. This photograph provides us with a glimpse into post-war Britain's industrious spirit as workers laboriously compacted concrete to ensure safe take-offs and landings for aircraft at Gaydon Airfield. It symbolizes resilience, progress, and dedication to national defense. Preserved by Historic England Archive, this remarkable snapshot allows us to appreciate both the historical significance of RAF Gaydon and the hardworking individuals who contributed to its development.
