Laing Management Contracting worked on the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority between 1989 and 1993. The new teaching hospital was built on the site of the old St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished in the early months of 1989. The use of fast track construction techniques enabled the entire project to be completed in less than 5 years. The hospital was officially opened by the Queen on 13 May 1993

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, located on Fulham Road in Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London. Taken from the south east perspective, the image showcases workers diligently leveling concrete for the ground floor of the Mental Health Centre in the foreground. Laing Management Contracting played a crucial role in overseeing this ambitious project between 1989 and 1993. Working on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority, they successfully transformed the site of the old St Stephens Hospital into a state-of-the-art teaching hospital. The demolition of its predecessor occurred earlier that year. Utilizing innovative fast track construction techniques, this immense undertaking was completed within an impressive timeframe of less than five years. Such efficiency allowed for timely delivery without compromising quality or safety standards. The grand opening ceremony took place on May 13th, 1993, with none other than Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II officiating. This historic event marked not only an architectural achievement but also a milestone in healthcare provision for residents of Kensington and Chelsea. Preserved by A© Historic England Archive, this remarkable photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and dedication displayed during one chapter in our ongoing pursuit to improve medical facilities for all communities.
