EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable construction of the Second Severn Crossing, a monumental civil engineering project that spanned four years. The image showcases cranes perched on platforms and concrete caissons firmly installed in the mighty River Severn. The joint effort between Laing Civil Engineering and GTM, a French company, brought this ambitious vision to life. Commencing in April 1992, their tireless work culminated in an unforgettable opening ceremony on June 5th, 1996. Stretching over an impressive distance of 5000 meters across the River Severn, this cable-stayed bridge stands as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. It is situated three miles downstream from its predecessor, the iconic Severn Bridge which was inaugurated in 1966. The photograph not only showcases the awe-inspiring scale of this construction endeavor but also provides a glimpse into the meticulous planning and execution required for such an undertaking. The sight of cranes towering above platforms highlights both the enormity of the task at hand and the precision with which it was carried out. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time by A© Historic England Archive, we are reminded of how infrastructure projects like these shape our world and connect communities. This photo serves as a visual reminder of human achievement while paying homage to those who dedicated themselves to building bridges - both literally and metaphorically - towards progress and connectivity.
