CAMBRIDGESHIRE. A view of the Fens gas pipeline during installation from across the Great Ouse Relief Channel, showing a dredging tractor owned by The Dredging & Construction Co Ltd in the foreground.
Work on laying the Fens gas pipeline started in June 1967 and was a joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM) for the Gas Council. Over 600 men worked on the project to lay 36 inch diameter steel pipes starting at West Winch in Norfolk and running to where it linked up with the next contract at Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire. The pipeline crossed four rivers and numerous dykes and ditches

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of engineering and infrastructure development. The image showcases the Fens gas pipeline, which was being installed during the summer of 1967. Standing on the opposite side of the Great Ouse Relief Channel, one can witness a dredging tractor owned by The Dredging & Construction Co Ltd in the foreground. The construction of this gas pipeline was an ambitious joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM) for the Gas Council. With over 600 dedicated men working tirelessly on this project, they aimed to lay 36-inch diameter steel pipes that would stretch from West Winch in Norfolk to Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire. Notably, this pipeline crossed four rivers along with numerous dykes and ditches, showcasing both technical expertise and environmental considerations. It played a crucial role not only in ensuring a reliable gas supply but also contributed to flood relief efforts within these areas. Preserved through time, this print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. It reminds us of our ability to conquer challenges while simultaneously respecting nature's delicate balance. Let it stand as an inspiration for future generations involved in similar feats of engineering prowess.
