Town Hall UXC01_01_01_0070_28

Town Hall, St Owen Street, Hereford. The front elevation of the Town Hall, built c1904 and designed by H. A. Cheers, seen from the north.
The hall is a two-storey building with a seven-window range and ornamental gable and towers, found on the corners and the apex of the roof. The entrance is in the central bay, and covered by a protruding round hood, supported by columns. At the far left and right are large round-headed arches, with the right being an entrance to the rear front. An ornamental frieze separates the ground and first floor, and there is an arcaded balcony in front of the recesses of the far left and right windows. The central bay of the first floor has square ionic columns with splayed capitals that support the large gable above, which spreads across the three central bays. There is a small broken circular pediment with a coat of arms, and above is an oval niche with a triangular hood, and round top to the gable. On either side of the gable are turrets with pyramidal finials, and on each corner of the building and apex of the roof are towers with domed roofs. There are some pedestrians and contemporary cars on the street in front of the hall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur and architectural beauty of Town Hall in St Owen Street, Hereford. Designed by H. A. Cheers and built around 1904, this two-storey building stands as a testament to the elegance of its time. The front elevation of the Town Hall is truly remarkable, with its ornamental gable and towers adorning the corners and roof apex. The entrance, located in the central bay, is covered by a protruding round hood supported by columns, adding an air of sophistication to the structure. As you gaze at this image, your eyes are drawn to the large round-headed arches on both sides of the building. While one serves as an entrance to the rear front, they both contribute to its overall charm. A decorative frieze separates the ground and first floor while an arcaded balcony graces the recesses of certain windows. The centerpiece of this magnificent hall lies within its first-floor central bay – square ionic columns with splayed capitals support a large gable that stretches across three bays. Above it rests a small broken circular pediment adorned with a coat of arms. An oval niche with a triangular hood further enhances its visual appeal. Turrets with pyramidal finials grace each side of the gable while towers with domed roofs punctuate every corner and roof peak. This picturesque scene also includes pedestrians strolling along contemporary cars parked on St Owen Street. Ursula Clark's photograph beautifully encapsulates not only Town Hall's architectural splendor but also offers us glimpses into everyday life during that era.
