Old Putney Bridge OFH01_01_01_f01_14

Old Putney Bridge, Putney, Wandsworth, Greater London. The view from Putney showing the old Putney Bridge crossing the River Thames with the Fulham tollhouse in the background.
The bridge, also known as Fulham Bridge, dated from 1729. It was badly damaged by a river barge in 1870. It was repaired but its days were numbered and in 1880 work began on a replacement. Shortly after completion of the new crossing in 1886, the old bridge, seen here, was demolished. In the background of this image can be seen the Red Lion public house (demolished 1884) and White Lion public house (demolished late 1870s)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a glimpse into the past, showcasing the iconic Old Putney Bridge in all its glory. Standing tall and proud, this historic bridge gracefully spans across the majestic River Thames, connecting Putney to Fulham in Greater London. Dating back to 1729, this architectural marvel was not only known as Old Putney Bridge but also referred to as Fulham Bridge. However, time took its toll on this beloved structure when it suffered severe damage from a river barge incident in 1870. Although repairs were made, it became evident that the days of this old bridge were numbered. In 1880, construction began on a new replacement for Old Putney Bridge. Shortly after completion in 1886, the old bridge seen here met its fate and was demolished. As we admire this photograph today, we can't help but appreciate the historical significance it holds. The image also offers glimpses of other notable landmarks that have since vanished from sight. The Red Lion public house (demolished in 1884) and White Lion public house (demolished in the late 1870s) add an extra layer of nostalgia to this already enchanting scene. Thanks to William O Field's keen eye behind the lens and Historic England's preservation efforts, we are able to cherish these remnants of our past – reminding us of how far we've come while honoring our rich heritage along the banks of one of Britain's most iconic rivers.
