Laing London and South East were contracted in the early 1990s to carry out development work at Durrington High School for West Sussex County Council. Phase I consisted of three new blocks housing science laboratories, technology workshops, classrooms, a library and other staff and administration areas. Phase II comprised a new sports hall and dining room. Other work at the site involved the refurbishment of the Rodmell Building, provision of a new drama centre, additional classrooms, and the demolition of the 1960s Boulevard Building

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Durrington High School in Worthing, West Sussex during the 1990s. The image showcases a glazed link between blocks at the school, with a group of cheerful school children standing outside. In the early 1990s, Laing London and South East were entrusted with an important development project by West Sussex County Council to enhance Durrington High School. Phase I involved constructing three new blocks that housed state-of-the-art science laboratories, technology workshops, classrooms, a library, as well as staff and administration areas. This expansion aimed to provide students with modern facilities conducive to their education. Phase II focused on building a brand-new sports hall and dining room for the students' recreational needs. Additionally, other improvements included refurbishing the Rodmell Building and establishing a new drama center along with extra classrooms. As part of this transformational process, the outdated Boulevard Building from the 1960s was also demolished. This photograph not only represents architectural progress but also evokes nostalgic memories of childhood and education. It serves as a testament to how educational institutions continuously evolve to meet changing demands while providing an enriching environment for young minds. Captured by A© Historic England Archive photographer Johansson (Joh), this print preserves an important chapter in Durrington High School's history and reminds us of its significance within the local community.
