Master and apprentice JLP01_09_762552c

Furzehill Road, Borehamwood, Elstree and Borehamwood, Hertsmere, Hertfordshire. A man with a spirit level assessing the work of a Laing apprentice bricklayer during the construction of the Furzehill Road housing development.
Laing began work on the Furzehill road contract in March 1976. 395 houses and flats would accommodate around 1, 400 people. The site was a former Home of Rest for Horses, giving rise to street names like Farriers Way. The contract became an unofficial training ground for apprentices and the old peoples club on the development was built entirely by apprentices. This photograph appears to have been taken to demonstrate careers within the construction side of the company

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment during the construction of the Furzehill Road housing development in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. The image showcases the dynamic relationship between a seasoned master and an eager apprentice within the construction industry. In this scene, a man can be seen meticulously assessing the work of a Laing apprentice bricklayer using a spirit level. This interaction symbolizes not only the dedication to precision and quality but also highlights the importance of mentorship and learning within this field. The Furzehill Road project, initiated by Laing in March 1976, aimed to provide homes for approximately 1,400 people through the construction of 395 houses and flats. Interestingly, this site was once home to horses at a Home of Rest for Horses facility - hence its unique street names like Farriers Way. What makes this photograph even more remarkable is that it serves as evidence of how this particular contract became an unofficial training ground for apprentices. The old peoples club on-site was entirely built by these aspiring builders, showcasing their skills and commitment to honing their craft. This image beautifully encapsulates not just an era but also signifies education, growth, teamwork, and dedication within the world of construction. It stands as a testament to both tradition and progress while reminding us that every great builder starts as an apprentice with dreams reaching sky-high.
