EDITORS COMMENTS
Frederick III, also known as Frederick III of the Palatinate or Frederick the Winter King, was a significant figure in European history during the 17th century. Born on September 19, 1609, in Heidelberg, Germany, Frederick was the Elector Palatine and Duke of Upper and Lower Silesia. His reign as King of Denmark and Norway, however, is what makes him most notable in Danish history. In 1648, following the Thirty Years' War, Christian IV of Denmark died without a male heir, leaving the Danish throne vacant. The Danish nobility turned to Frederick III as the next viable candidate due to his close relationship with the Danish royal family through his mother, Princess Anne of Denmark. Frederick was crowned King of Denmark and Norway on May 26, 1648, in Roskilde Cathedral. Frederick's reign was marked by significant military campaigns and territorial expansions. He successfully defended Denmark against attacks from Sweden and secured the Duchy of Holstein-Gottorp as a Danish fief. However, his military endeavors were costly, and his attempts to reform the Danish economy and administration were met with resistance from the nobility. Frederick's personal life was also marked by tragedy. His first wife, Elizabeth of the Palatinate, died in childbirth in 1642, leaving him a widower with two young children. In 1643, he married Sophie Amalie of Brandenburg, with whom he had no children. Frederick died on February 9, 1670, in Copenhagen, leaving the Danish throne to his nephew, Christian V. This portrait of Frederick III, likely taken during his reign as King of Denmark, showcases his regal bearing and the grandeur of the Danish monarchy during this period. The intricate details of his attire, the rich fabrics, and the elaborate decorations reflect the opulence and power of the Danish court. Despite the challenges he faced during his reign, Frederick III remains an important figure in Danish and European history.
