This striking portrait of Michiel de Ruyter, painted by Ferdinand Bol in 1667, captures the Dutch Admiral in his prime as Lieutenant-Admiral of the Dutch Navy. De Ruyter, born in 1607 in the Netherlands, rose through the ranks of the Dutch military to become one of the most celebrated commanders of the 17th century. His nickname, "St. Michael," was earned through his many victories against the English Navy. In this portrait, de Ruyter is depicted wearing the richly decorated uniform of a Lieutenant-Admiral, complete with a golden baton and a sash adorned with the Order of St. Michael.
