EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait of Michiel de Ruyter, painted by Ferdinand Bol in 1667, captures the Dutch Admiral in his prime as Lieutenant-Admiral of the Dutch Navy. De Ruyter, born in 1607 in the Netherlands, rose through the ranks of the Dutch military to become one of the most celebrated commanders of the 17th century. His nickname, "St. Michael," was earned through his many victories against the English Navy. In this portrait, de Ruyter is depicted wearing the richly decorated uniform of a Lieutenant-Admiral, complete with a golden baton and a sash adorned with the Order of St. Michael. The landscape in the background hints at the maritime setting of his career, with a boat and a net in the foreground adding to the theme. De Ruyter stands confidently on a balcony, his hand holding a map and his gaze fixed on the horizon. His long, curly hair and prominent mustache are characteristic of the era. De Ruyter's military career was marked by numerous victories, including the Battle of the Gabbard in 1673, which is considered one of the greatest naval battles in history. His leadership and strategic skills were instrumental in the Dutch Republic's ability to maintain its independence against foreign powers. This portrait, now housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, is a testament to the legacy of this great Dutch hero. It is a reminder of the rich artistic and historical heritage of the Netherlands and Europe during the 17th century.
