EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Avro 695 Lincolnian G-ALPF, the sole UK-registered example of this unique aircraft type, parked at Southend Airport prior to its scrapping in 1952. Originally an RAF Lincoln B.2 RE290, this aircraft was converted by Airflight Ltd. in 1949 for use in the Berlin Airlift. It made one flight carrying essential freight, and went on to complete an impressive 45 sorties as a bulk fuel carrier. The Avro 695 Lincolnian was also converted for the Argentine Air Force, becoming LV-ZEI and serving as the Cruz del Sud for Antarctic survey flights. Three more Lincolnians were converted by Field Aircraft Services with a larger pannier for an abortive Paraguayan meat packing company, but were ultimately not delivered and scrapped instead. This photograph, taken circa 1950, captures a poignant moment in aviation history as this historic aircraft awaited its final fate.
