EDITORS COMMENTS
The Year of the Three British Kings - 1936: A Historical Moment in Royal Succession This evocative photograph captures the essence of a remarkable year in British royal history - 1936, the year that saw the reigns of three monarchs: King George V, King Edward VIII, and King George VI. In the center, the venerable figure of King George V (1865-1936) sits in his regal majesty, wearing the traditional uniform of the Order of the Garter. His stern yet compassionate expression conveys the weight of responsibility borne by a monarch who had ruled for over 25 years. To his right, an inset oval portrait showcases his eldest son, King Edward VIII (1894-1972), who succeeded his father upon his death in January 1936. Edward's reign, however, was brief and tumultuous. His decision to abdicate in December of that same year, due to his desire to marry the twice-divorced Wallis Simpson, left the British people and the royal family stunned. The final portrait in this trio is of King George VI (1895-1952), who ascended to the throne following his brother's abdication. George's regal bearing and resolute expression speak of the determination and courage required to lead a nation through uncertain times. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the historical significance of 1936, a year that saw three kings rule in quick succession, each leaving an indelible mark on the annals of British royalty.
