EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the enchanting Polawyn lodge, nestled amidst the picturesque countryside of Trelowarren, Mawgan in Meneage, Cornwall. The year is approximately 1890, and standing proudly in front of this charming thatched cottage are an elderly couple accompanied by their loyal companions - seven dogs. The gentleman, believed to be Charles Randle (possibly Rundle), was recorded as the game keeper residing here during the 1891 census. His weathered face reflects a lifetime spent tending to the estate's wildlife and ensuring its preservation for generations to come. Beside him stands his beloved wife Mary Curnow, peering out from the doorway with a gentle smile on her lips. Mary's presence adds warmth and homeliness to this idyllic scene. Born in Mullion and baptized on August 2nd, 1812, she carries with her years of memories etched into every line on her face. Tragically, Mary passed away in April 1894 but lives forever through this poignant photograph. Preserved within the A. K. Hamilton Jenkin collection at Royal Cornwall Museum, this snapshot captures not only a moment frozen in time but also offers a glimpse into rural life during that era. The identity of the photographer remains unknown; however, their skillful composition has immortalized these humble inhabitants against a backdrop of natural beauty.
