Capturing the Birth of Industry - Building the HTP Warehouse in Truro, Cornwall

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photograph taken around 1911, we are transported back in time to witness the construction of the iconic HTP warehouse on Malpas Road. This monumental structure was being erected for Hosken, Trevithick and Polkinhorn - esteemed agricultural and grain merchants who played a vital role in shaping Cornwall's economy. The image showcases a hive of activity as gangs of dedicated workers laboriously build the frame using scaffolding. Amidst them stands a figure that could possibly be their supervisor, distinguished by his bowler hat. Fearlessly perched atop girders, some workers balance precariously while others firmly grasp their tools of trade. Their collective efforts symbolize both resilience and determination. Designed by renowned architect Alfred J. Cornelius, this architectural marvel would later become part of the Poltisco Wharf development housing nine modern apartments. However, at this moment captured frozen in time, it is an emblematic representation of progress within Cornwall's industrial landscape. Photographer Arthur William Jordan skillfully captures not only the physicality but also the spirit behind this grand endeavor. His lens immortalizes an era when riverside buildings like these flourished along with Cornish industries such as milling and grain production. This historic print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and hard work; it reminds us how our ancestors laid foundations upon which future generations continue to thrive today.
