Framed Photos from Royal Cornwall Museum

Padstow railway station from across the estuary, Cornwall. Before 1907

A distant view of the station with steam and smoke issuing from the train locomotive alongside the station platform. In the distance to the left of the station can be seen the girder railway bridge crossing Little Petherick Creek and again in the distance above the smoke and steam can be seen the obelisk on St Dennis Hill. The photograph was probably taken some time before 1907, as the OS map published in 1907 shows a building called the fish shed just to the right of the station and on the estuary side of the station complex being under construction. The station was the western terminus of the North Cornwall Railway and was operated by the London and South Western Railway

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a nostalgic scene of Padstow railway station in Cornwall, taken before 1907. From across the estuary, one can admire the picturesque view of the station with its charming steam locomotive billowing smoke and steam alongside the platform. The distant landscape reveals a girder railway bridge gracefully spanning Little Petherick Creek to the left of the station. Above the ethereal haze, one can glimpse St Dennis Hill's obelisk standing tall against the sky. The photograph provides valuable historical insight as it predates 1907 when an OS map shows ongoing construction of a building called "the fish shed" on the estuary side of Padstow station complex. Serving as the western terminus for North Cornwall Railway, this bustling hub was operated by London and South Western Railway during that era. Transporting us back to Edwardian times, this cornish gem evokes feelings of wonder and curiosity about life in those bygone days. It reminds us how railways connected communities and facilitated travel across breathtaking landscapes like Camel Estuary
